Washington becomes the next state with a panic button law

Washington State's new panic button law took effect January 1, 2026, and it goes further than many expected. Covered employers, including retail, hospitality, and security businesses, must provide wearable panic button devices or another easily accessible duress system for at-risk employees, with GPS enabled alerts, documented escalation procedures, and mandatory training records.

Silent activation is preferred over audible alarms, the same principle behind New York's silent response button requirement we've covered here before. Washington is a reminder that this is not a one state trend: retailers with a multi-state footprint should expect more of this, not less.
